The Congress has nominated Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who lost the Lok Sabha election from Latur, and All India Congress Committee general secretaries Ambika Soni and Oscar Fernandes as its candidates for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections on June 28.
Vijay Darda, owner of the Lokmat group of publications, has been re-nominated from Maharashtra along with Patil, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said in New Delhi on Thursday.
Soni, who had resigned her Rajya Sabha seat on Wednesday from Delhi although she had around 18 months to go, has been fielded from Punjab.
Her move to vacate her seat from Delhi is being viewed as a precautionary measure in the light of a pending petition before the Supreme Court challenging the amended electoral law allowing open ballot system and doing away with the domicile status of candidates.
Union Power Minister P M Sayeed, who lost the polls from Lakshadweep, may be nominated in place of Soni from Delhi for the remaining period.
Fernandes and Minister of State for Programme Implementation and AICC Secretary B K Hari Prasad have been nominated from Karnataka, Sharma said.
