5.5 quake hits Nicobar island

June 17, 2005 12:42 IST

A moderate intensity earthquake on Friday shook the Nicobar Islands, which had witnessed widespread devastation due to tsunami last year.

The quake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 0808 IST, the meteorological department said.

It had its epicentre off the southeast coast of Great Nicobar Island.

Thousands of people in the island group were killed when giant waves hit following a 9-magnitude quake off the Indonesian coast on December 26 last year.

The islands have experienced hundreds of aftershocks since then.
