Yoga sessions will be organized for central government employees and their dependents by the ‘Grih Kalyan Kendra’, a welfare society working under the aegis of the Centre.

The sessions will be organised from December 1 at five centres of the Grih Kalyan Kendra, a notice issued on Wednesday by the society said.

The GKK functions under the aegis of ministry of personnel, public grievances and pensions to promote social, economic, cultural and educational activities for the welfare of central government employees and their families.

The yoga sessions will be held between 7-9 am for six days in a week, the notice said. There are about 31 lakh central government employees.

It is pertinent to mention that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is known to start his day with yoga, had on November 9 created a separate ministry of AYUSH -- Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy.

Earlier, the department was under the Health Ministry.

AYUSH is entrusted to provide focused attention to development of education and research in ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy systems.

Also in his speech at the United Nations in September, Modi had asked member countries to celebrate June 21 as International Yoga Day.
