HC allows minor girl to live with her husband

March 29, 2007 03:38 IST

The Delhi high court has allowed a couple that eloped to live away from their parents despite the girl being a minor.

A division bench of Justices Manmohan Sarin and S L Bhayana on Monday allowed the couple to stay together after the man produced evidence pertaining to his employment and the couple's parents promised not to harm them.

In the previous hearing, the court was apprehensive about letting the 16-year-old girl live with the man as he had failed to produce any evidence regarding his employment.

Earlier, the bench recorded the statement of the 22-year-old man and the girl after the police produced them before it in response to an earlier order by the court. They placed on record documents pertaining to their marriage in Panipat on February 13.

The bench also recorded the statements of the parents of the couple, who assured the court that they would not be harmed.

The court was hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by the man's brother, who claimed there was a threat to the couple.
