Dubai: Indian freed after paying blood money

January 24, 2006 19:03 IST
An Indian, who had been serving a jail sentence for the past two years for failing to pay blood money to the family of a compatriot killed in a lift accident, has been released after some people came forward to pay the amount.

The court had ordered 39 year-old Sabhapathy to pay Dh 75,000 (Rs 9 lakh approx) as blood money to the family of his colleague, Veeramuthu, who died when a mixer bucket from a lift operated by the former came hurtling down in January 2004.

It also ordered him to pay Dh 3,000 towards court expenses, bringing the total to Dh 78,000. He was also sentenced to undergo a one-month prison term, a report said in Dubai.

Sabhapathy's brother Radhakrishnan, a labourer working for a company in Al Quoz, was looking for help for the last two years, as he himself could not manage the large amount. He appealed against the verdict and the Court of Appeal reduced the blood money to Dh 75,000.

However, after Khaleej Times published his story, many people came forward to help him by paying the money he needed for blood money. Sabhapathy was subsequently released from jail and resumed working in his company in Sonapur.

"I cannot believe I am out of jail. I never thought I would manage to pay the blood money. I am out of jail now, thanks to the good samaritans," he said adding that he is looking forward to flying back home for a vacation in February.

"The blood money was Dh 75,000. The company I was working for paid Dh 45,000. People who came to know of my condition have now paid the rest. My company was sending money to my family every month," he said.
