Basu to meet Sonia tomorrow

July 30, 2004 21:16 IST

In a bid to ensure smooth running of the government, Communist Party of India-Marxist leaders will meet United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday to finalise a coordination committee between the alliance and Left parties by Sunday.

"Senior party leader Jyoti Basu will meet UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi tomorrow, and hopefully by Sunday the coordination committee will be finalised," CPI-M politburo member Prakash Karat said after wrapping up the first day discussion of the party's central committee.

The initiative for the coordination committee comes after public voicing of differences between the UPA and the supporting Left parties on crucial issues, including foreign direct investment in insurance.

He said the party's politburo, which met on Thursday and and Friday morning, placed before the 70-member central committee the reports on election review and current political and economic developments.

The central committee will discuss both the reports and finalise the party's "attitude and intervention" in the Maharashtra assembly election slated for September.

Moreover, the committee will also seek to address the organisational weaknesses and come out with measures to expand its presence outside Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura.

The committee will also discuss how the common minimum programme will be implemented and issues related to the Union budget.
