The Nominations...

If you haven't sent in your nominations as yet, please remember to do so before Christmas Day. Marvellous surprises await the 12 best entries.

Name:Vipul Desai
Email:nirvipin@giasbm01.vsnl.net.in
Nomination:K R Narayanan
Reason why:We have had a disastrous political year, but one man who has shown true grit & commonsense is unbelievably our President. He has triggered hope among the common people that there are some good people whom they can trust in this bad world of politics. The rest of the jokers should be publicly humiliated for bringing shame & disgrace to our country.

Name:DR.R.KRISHNAMURTHY
Email:balai@tm.net.my
Nomination:Nakkeran Gopal
Reason why:For his effort for talks between sandalwood smuggler Veerappan and the Tamil Nadu chief minister.

Name:Rama Bijapurkar
Email:bijapurkar@hotmail.com
Nomination:P Chidambaram
Reason why:Did his duty very well till his last day -- stayed apolitical despite being a politician

Name:P.S.Narayan
Email:psn@mdsro.ms.gw.wiprobt.ems.vsnl.net.in
Nomination:Mother Teresa
Reason why:Simple, because this is the last opportunity to nominate her. We cannot nominate her next year onwards, except maybe for "Person of the century". So this is the last chance to pay tribute to the greatest Indian after Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

Name:Mohamed Younus Khan
Email:khanmy@cig.mot.com
Nomination:Dr. Abdul Kalam
Reason why:His great contribution to the Indian Space Research Organisation especially in the missile programme.

Name:Sailesh Yellumahanti
Email:msyellum@gsbpop.uchicago.edu
Nomination:P A Sangma
Reason why:He was the only person in Parliament with a semblance of parliamentary and moral propriety.

Name:Altaf Shaikh
Email:altaf@mailhost.net
Nomination:Dr A P J Abdul Kalam
Reason why:Politicians aside, sports personalities aside. The one reason India can stand tall in front of its neighbours and does not bow down to the world is the one-track marathon effort of Dr Kalam and his colleagues. We Indians owe it to him for the pride that India shows in its missile programmes and other technological advances in the Indian defence industry.

The reason a true scientist like him should be the Indian of the year is coz sportsmen, politicians and movie stars are almost always in the limelight. It is people like him who work behind the scenes that need to be felicitated and deserve a fair share of recognition. A jewel in the crown at the fag end of his career will also almost certainly motivate the young Indian men and women to pursue their quench for advances in the scientific arena with whatever resources they have at hand in India unlike the abundant and wealthy West.

Name:Sudhir Balusu
Email:sudhir@umr.edu
Nomination:A B Vajpayee
Reason why:Because I feel he is the only person left in India who can really turn things around for the good of the country and he is the only honest living politician.

Name:Palanikumar Tamilmoni
Email:y9a06@ttacs.ttu.edu
Nomination:Dr Abdul Kalam
Reason why:He has given India the missile technology which is needed badly in this age of rivalry. He has made Indians proud.

Name:Gangi Reddy Yugender
Email:greddy@att.com
Nomination:N Chandrababu Naidu
Reason why:I think he is the best administrator we ever had. He has a good vision and a disciplined politician and am proud of him as our chief minister. He has introduced some of the unique schemes like community work (Janmabhoomi), new IT park, wooing the foreign companies etc. I am sure he will come out a clear winner.

Name:Rao Yerramilli
Email:raoy@umich.edu
Nomination:Dr Abdul Kalam
Reason why:Even in India, he could galvanise a team that produced results. A country where results and accountability are unknown and where everything is Karma-based. He got the results. I am proud to have been associated through Godrej with this man in India. May God bless India with many more Abdul Kalams than Sukh Rams. Jai Hind.

Name:a v senthil
Email:asenthi@netmail3.mnet.uswest.com
Nomination:Manmohan Singh
Reason why:He had an excellent academic background, plus brought reforms to India for the very first time.

I call him Person of 1997 because fellow countrymen don't recognise him when he is not in office.

Name:Milind Shrotri
Email:Milind.Shrotri@mci.com
Nomination:Asha Bhosle
Reason why:Why not? I mean all other nominees like Abdul Kalam, Mother Teresa are true greats but are we not forgetting that this lady deserves more recognition at least once after being dubbed as a runner-up all the time. To me she is a great singer with most controlled and versatile voice ever heard. Kudos to the real Melody Queen!

Name:R.RAVI
Email:krravi@yahoo.com
Nomination:Maestro ILAYARAAJA
Reason why:The best Film Musician ever born in INDIA. His knowledge of indian music and western music has enthralled people worldwide. THE FIRST ASIAN TO SCORE A SYMPHONY WITH THE LONDON PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA.

Name:Cheryl Bentley
Email:cheryl@slip.net
Nomination:the Indian citizen
Reason why:In spite of one scam on top of the other, momentous egos that care little about the country, an infrastructure that wobbling to the tune of greed, the ordinary Indian faces life with a patience, serenity, and warmth that is rare in this world. The political situation may be a mess, but the Indian heart still glows.

Name:Anil Thakur
Email:anilta@del2.vsnl.net.in
Nomination:P A Sangma
Reason why:He had the guts to tell our politicians who looked unassailable to behave and he could implement what he said.

Name:Sagar Mandava
Email:mandavass@hotmail.com
Nomination:Chandrababu Naidu
Reason why:Mr Naidu is a dynamic and result-oriented politician with a vision for the future. His efforts and innovative programmes have attracted many multinational giants to the state of Andhra Pradesh. A leader of his potential is needed for the country in the present political instability to lead India into the new millennium.

Name:Guna
Email:gunam@usa.net
Nomination:Mr. P. Chidambaram, Finance Minister
Reason why:Only person soing that is really good for the country albeit the slack of morale in recent governments.

Name:Harry Menon
Email:monk@arbornet.org
Nomination:INDIAN -- is it fantasy man??
Reason why:We miss the whole truth. I pity those people think of Kesri, Laloo or Veerappan as the MAN !

You are the Indian. Make the change... like 100s of unknown heroes !

Good luck India.

Name:Sankar
Email:Sankarnp@hotmail.com
Nomination:Dr Abdul Kalam
Reason why:In this era of corruption and lawlessness, he is one person who makes us feel that we will achieve something

Name:Shiraz Kanga
Email:skanga@bigfoot.com
Nomination:Mother Teresa
Reason why:Wrong question. Is there anyone who can think of a reason why she should not get the award?

Name:Venkatesh
Email:venkat@aditi.com
Nomination:Shri K R Narayanan
Reason why:K R Narayanan is corruption-free...Yes, but this doesn't make him unique. So, what makes him unique??? The answer is his BOLDNESS and proper usage of POWER.

He has proved to the Indian public that a President has some role to play in the way government functions and is not a puppet controlled by the ruling party.
