Haiwaan Is A Flop Show

Haiwaan is yet another disappointment from Priyadarshan after Bhooth Bangla.

It remains a good idea buried under a badly executed film. Akshay simply can’t crack the villain, Saif, in comparison, is at least, earnest. The big superstar cameo was fun to watch, but not enough to rescue the film. Even the audience response stayed thanda throughout the film, with even a couple of walkouts in my cinema.

Not insufferable, but frustratingly underwhelming watch.

And with that, the Haiwaan liveblog comes to an end.

On To The Climax

Revenge-fuelled Akshay is ready for the Saif showdown. Saif’s Shyam has such sharp ears, they could rival the creatures from A Quiet Place! Saiyami finally gets some footage, but far too late. And Akshay’s dialogue delivery continues to butcher the character.

Saif Goes Full Action Hero

Okay, Haiwaan has now entered the anything-can-happen zone. Saif’s blind man is now beating up a bunch of policemen inside a police station.

A blind man. In a police station. Beating up cops.

Is this supposed to be serious?

Akshay's Villainy Goes Awry

There’s a supposedly edgy sequence in a parking lot where Akshay’s Parsuram taunts Saif’s Shyam. It’s meant to be a tense face-off, but the execution is so painfully off that it becomes unintentionally hilarious. Sorry Akki fans, but this is seriously entering worst-performance-of-the-year territory.

Second Half Begins...

After that grim interval, Haiwaan suddenly switches gears into comedy, with Priyadarshan's usual player Rajpal Yadav bringing some misplaced humour. Sharib Hashmi enters as Inspector Shinde and is clearly having a blast with his delightfully crude character.

Saiyami Kher, though, remains on the sidelines. Her character has no impact on the story so far.

Early Thoughts On Haiwaan

It’s interval, and Haiwaan has been a slow, underwhelming ride so far. The Saif-Akshay showdown ends the first half on a promising note, but the central drama still lacks punch.

Performance-wise, Saif Ali Khan edges Akshay Kumar, who feels rather caricaturish as the villain.

A Much-Needed Jolt

After a couple of dull songs and sluggish build-up, Haiwaan finally gets interesting with Akshay’s Parsuram and Saif’s Shyam clashing in a slick house-invasion sequence.

And Shriya’s housemaid character clearly has more skin in the game than she’s letting on ...

Little Surprises...

Okay, Kalyan Jewellers is clearly on board as a sponsor. Those jewellery pieces are getting plenty of love from the camera.

And what a nice surprise to see the late Asrani pop up briefly. He was a delight on screen in Priyadarshan’s Bhooth Bangla too ❤️

A Sleepy Haiwaan

Rather a thanda start for Haiwaan. Too slow and uninteresting so far. Shriya Pilgaonkar gets a blink-and-miss entry but looks lovely in a saree. Saiyami Kher’s Marathi-speaking cop Varsha Joshi commands authority, though her character looks straight out of Jaat. Same look, same vibe.

Saif's Sharp Blind Hero

The film quickly establishes Saif’s blind character as someone who may not see, but is always alert and sharp. Much like Akshay in Bhooth Bangla, his Shyam is busy helping arrange his sister’s wedding.

Cameo, Spoiled

Akshay’s intro wastes no time showing his darker side. What’s with that tattoo on his back, though? Is there more to it? We will see.

Also, Haiwaan spoils its major cameo appearance by naming it in the opening credits. Ugh! Could have been a great surprise otherwise.

Mukesh And Empty Seats...

Before Akshay and Saif take over the screen, the famous (!!!) Mukesh makes a comeback with the no-smoking cautionary. Usually, his appearance gets a gasp or two 😁 but the occupancy for Haiwaan is so low, even Mukesh can’t find an audience.

Back To Happy Place

There’s a certain comfort I find in movie theatres! No matter how Haiwaan turns out, being in a theatre, surrounded by fellow movie lovers, is a joy that never gets old :)

Beyond Akshay & Saif

Haiwaan also has Shriya Pilgaonkar, riding high on Mirzapur: The Movie, and Saiyami Kher, who’s always a treat to watch. Here’s hoping these two don’t get eclipsed by the film’s heavyweight leads.

Blind v/s Psychotic

Bollywood’s long tryst with visually impaired characters gets a fresh twist as Saif Ali Khan goes blind on screen for the first time. He is up against Akshay Kumar’s psychotic villain!

Now this should be interesting 👀

Fresh Eyes For Haiwaan

Priyadarshan does the remake of his celebrated Malayalam hit Oppam, starring Mohanlal.

Haven’t seen the original, so I am going in completely blank slate. No comparisons, no baggage...going in with fresh eyes🤞🏼(Photo courtesy: Shriya Pilgaonkar/Instagram)

Priyadarshan, Seriously?

Director Priyadarshan going serious is another wild card I am watching closely. We know the comic chops, now let’s see that dramatic muscle.
