SP rules out alliance with Congress

The Samajwadi Party today ruled out any truck with the Congress in Uttar Pradesh or in any state where the United Front constituents have a strong presence.

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav told the party's national executive meeting that he was committed to the Front.

Briefing the media later, party spokesperson Amar Singh said, ''Though the SP strongly believed that the Congress was a lesser evil, its role in remaining a 'passive spectator' when the Babri Masjid was demolished in 1992 could not be wished away.

''Our resolve to fight the BJP and other communal forces should not be misunderstood as soft stance towards the Congress,'' Amar Singh maintained.

Ruling out any truck with the Bahujan Samaj Party, he said the SP along with other UF constituents was enough to take on the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

The SP will contest over 100 Lok Sabha seats in the general election.
