Bengali film producer Bimal Dey dead

Noted film-maker Bimal Dey, who produced Satyajit Ray's Charulata and Mahanagar, died in Calcutta this morning after a prolonged illness. He was 79. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Dey, who actively participated in the freedom struggle and was imprisoned for several years by the British, was born in Barishal (now in Bangladesh). He became a film producer after Partition and produced more than 28 films. Several of his films received national and international awards.

Malyadan received the national award for the best film in 1970. Chinnamul, a film on the partition of Bengal in 1949, and Saat Parkey Bandha starring Suchitra Sen bagged several international awards.

His last film Naukadubi, based on a Tagore classic, was highly acclaimed by critics. Dey was chairman of the jury for selecting the Indian panorama section for the 1992 Bangalore film festival.
