'The fellow I was talking to shook his head'

February 26, 2009
As a brother, Hemant Karkare was given to compassion and generosity coupled with a ready wit and practical jokes. However, when it came to the crunch, he was always there to guide, support and counsel his younger siblings.

This gentle, soft-spoken man enjoyed his hobby of carving lamps and shades out of woodwork. He would collect bits of driftwood and chisel them into photo frames, lamp shades and artifacts that are present in all the rooms of his house.

Another vivid memory Shirish has is of the games of chess the two brothers played. "He would always win, no matter how hard I tried. I would get frustrated and insist on playing more and more, in the hope that I might finally win a game. At the end, he would get so bored of playing that he would try and allow me to win. But even then, I'd miss the openings he would leave for me, until he got completely irritated and threatened to close the game if I didn't end it in three moves!"
