Militants hurled a powerful grenade at the private house of Manipur Panchayati Raj Minister Mohammed Alaudin in East Imphal district, official sources said on Tuesday.

No one was injured in the attack as the grenade failed to explode, they said.

The minister and his family were not present at the time of the incident as they stay at their official residence in Imphal .

The incident, which occurred at Kiyamgei area, about 15 km from Imphal, on Monday evening, was reported to police by family members of the minister's brother who live next to the minister's house, they said.

The grenade was later defused by bomb disposal experts.

The militants ran towards Lilong area in nearby Thoubal district, the sources said.

Police would investigate whether the incident was connected with monetary demand from the minister by a militant outfit. No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
