A 17-year-old boy was gored to death and 40 others were injured in a Jallikattu (bull taming) event at Malayakovil village in Pudukottai district, police sources said.

They said the deceased, who was killed on Thursday, was identified as R Vijayakumar of Kaikurichi village.

The injured were treated as out-patients at the health camp located inside the Jallikattu ground.

Following a review petition from the Tamil Nadu government, the Supreme Court, which had first upheld the ban order of Madras high court, permitted holding Jallikattu during Pongal festival with some guidelines to guard against casualties and cruelty to animals.
