'Indians in Malaysia are not marginalised'

January 09, 2008

"The Indians in Malaysia are not marginalised. All their needs have been and will be taken care of. There are only a few people who are bent on creating trouble. This tarnishes the image of an entire community," he told journalists.

He also brushed aside the issue of temples in Malaysia being demolished indiscriminately. "Temples are not demolished indiscriminately. Only some temples that were illegally constructed were demolished. Even otherwise, spare a thought to this. It is a Muslim majority country. And there are 24,000 temples there. This translates into one temple for every 80 Indians. Name me one country where there is so much tolerance towards the minorities?" he asked.

After defending his ruling coalition in the media, the minister went back to a seminar.

That was when another bunch of Malaysian Indians landed. The Malaysian Indian Congress has rebels too! Log Nathan, a former councilor and an aide of Vellu for 30 years, was propped as the face of the rebel group. There were industrialists, politicians and working class Indians in this group.
