Headmaster of an upper primary school in Kerala [Images] was on Saturday sentenced to one-year imprisonment by a lower court in connection with a case of burning the National Flag on Republic Day in 2005.

Abdul Wahab removed the National Flag hoisted in front of a school at Akkel in Kollam district on the Republic Day and burned it after taking it to his house nearby, the prosecution said.

The headmaster was on suspension at the time of incident on charges of alleged financial irregularities.

Kottarakara first class magistrate court passed the sentence on charges of dishonouring the National Flag. Personal enmity with the head master of the lower primary school was stated to be the reason for the act. Both schools were run by the same management.
