'I don't think Chinese Communist party is Leftist'
November 23, 2007

When the nuclear deal with US faced resistance in India, it was said to have helped China and Pakistan.

Still, the nuclear deal will not legalise India as a nuclear power-State in strategic and civilian sense. It is not China's goal to block the nuclear deal as such. It is China’s goal to prevent India from becoming the obedient strategic partner. It is a different issue if it can succeed in achieving that. That is a potential threat to China.

The US is playing typical ideological politics. But, China and the US are so incredibly mutually dependent on each other economically. A British author Niall Ferguson wrote an article calling China and America as one economy named 'Chinamerica.'

In East China goods are made and in the West, in US goods are consumed, he wrote. Chinese send goods on credit while the US accumulates hundreds of millions of debts. China uses trade surplus investing in US treasury and keeps the American economy afloat. Larry Summers called this a balance of financial terror. US and China cannot live without each other. It is unthinkable that both can go for confrontation; it will be case of mutual destruction.

How Leftist is China's Communist party?

I do not think the Chinese Communist party is Leftist. The Chinese system is now wild -- laissez-faire capitalism under the leadership of the Communist party, which has changed from a Left-wing proletarian party to an opportunistic, Right-wing authoritarian party. That is more or less an accurate analysis.

Being a European do you miss democracy in China?

No, no. Personally, I am not a part of Chinese society. China is an authoritarian State and no longer Totalitarian. There are very few restrictions on social and cultural life in China. There are restrictions on internet and that irritates me.
