Those opposing the Sethusamudram literature and history are anti-nationals, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has said.

Speaking at a public meeting organised by the Sethusamudram Protection Committee in Chennai on Wednesday night, he said anyone trying to stall the project was an enemy of the nation and was acting against the interests of the state.

He also sought the support of the people in implementing the project.

Karunanidhi pointed out that the present alignment for the project was approved by the National Environmental and Engineering Institute when the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance was in power.

"NEERI had then recommended the dredging of Adam's Bridge, which is now being called Ramar Sethu," he said adding, that the Ramar Sethu existed only in the imagination of people.

"Some political parties in the state are trying to sabotage the project in the name of Rama," he said adding, that people would not pardon them.

In fact, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, in its 2001 election manifesto, had appealed to the Centre to implement the project by demolishing the Adam's Bridge, he said. However, they were opposing it now for political reasons, he charged.

The implementation of the project would lead to economic prosperity for the state and elevation of India to the superpower status, he said.

Those opposing the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project were doing so as they could not tolerate the credit it would bring to the DMK government, he added.
