The inspiration for the Taj Mahal

May 10, 2007
In Delhi's Nizamuddin area is Humayun's Tomb, a big tourist attraction, built by Hamida Bahu Begum, Humayun's widow. The design of the Taj Mahal in Agra is inspired from this tomb.

"Today even if you want to construct such a monument you will not be able to do it," says Azharuddin Shaikh, a student of Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi. "Even if you spend crores of rupees you will not be able to build such a beautiful monument because you will never get the right kind of architecture and labourers to build such a mausoleum," he adds.

It was here at Humayun's Tomb that last Mughal king Bahadur Shah Zafar took shelter after the British invaded Delhi.

The British finally nabbed him here, and he surrendered with his wife Zeenat Mahal on September 21, 1857. He was sent to exile in Burma, now Myanmar -- where he died on November 7, 1862, at the age of 87.
