After Indian soldiers rebelled in Meerut on May 10, 1857, they attacked Delhi and captured
it from the British on May 11, 1857.
The British stayed back outside the city and fought with the freedom fighters, who were defeated in four months.
The first sign of British victory came when they took Kashmiri Gate from the rebels. Within a week the Red Fort -- built by Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal emperor -- too had fallen.
The Red Fort will witness the Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh inaugurating the national celebration to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the First War of India’s Independence.
The celebration began in Meerut on May 7. Thousands of people from all over India came together to honour the freedom fighters who revolted against the British.
