A four-member delegation of the National Democratic Alliance met Election Commissioner Navin Chawala and demanded appropriate action against the Congress for seeking the dismissal of former Union minister Natwar Singh.

He had proposed Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat for the President's post.

The Congress, in its application filed on June 26, had sought Natwar's disqualification on the ground that he had campaigned for the Samajvadi party during the Uttar Pradesh elections while being a member of the Congress.

"We have asked the commission to intervene in this case and take whatever appropriate action it deems necessary," Sushma Swaraj, who led the delegation, said.

The NDA dropped its demand to cancel the nomination of Pratibha Patil on the grounds that the Congress was exerting undue pressure on the voters and was trying to influence the outcome of the elections.
