The National Democratic Alliance's talks with Third Front leaders are almost over and it will back Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat as an independent candidate in the presidential election, a senior BJP leader has said.

The leader, who did not want to be identified, said there was no more scope for talks with the leaders of the newly-formed United National Progressive Alliance.

After President A P J Abdul Kalam's rejection of their proposal for seeking a term, the UNPA leaders met the NDA leaders, who sought their support for NDA-backed independent candidate Shekhawat.

The bharatiya Janata Party leader said the UNPA leaders did not give any assurance of support to Shekhawat.  There was no scope for further talks on the presidential election, the leader said.
