A key witness in the sensational BMW [Images] hit-and-run case on Thursday again took a U-turn when he told a court in New Delhi that he did not see the main accused, Sanjeev Nanda, alighting from the vehicle after it had mowed down six persons in January 1999."It is correct that, due to the circumstances, I could not see the persons including Sanjeev Nanda who had come out of the offending car after the accident," Sunil Kulkarni, a Mumbai-based trader and an eye witness to the incident, told Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar.
"I can only speak about the physique of the occupants of the car as I did not see them clearly," he said during his cross-examination in the case.
Earlier, Kulkarni on May 17 had categorically identified Sanjeev Nanda, grandson of former Naval chief Admiral S M Nanda, as the person who had alighted from the BMW car after the accident on the morning of January 10, 1999.
Kulkarni also alleged that ACP Ranbeer Singh had beaten him mercilessly at Hauz Khas police station before the recording of his testimony in the court in 1999.
On being inquired about the reason of the alleged beating, Kulkarni said he did not remember as to whether police wanted him to resile from or stick to his earlier testimony.
Kulkarni, following a report filed by the police about his unreliability as a witness, had been dropped from the witnesses' list. However, later he was summoned as a court witness.
