In a radical reform move, Kerala's [Images] Left Democratic Front government is planning to amend rules to facilitate worship in temples by all those believe in Hinduism.
The Temple Entry Proclamation Rules of 1936 will be amended suitably to allow entry of all believers into temples, including the famous Sree Krishna Temple in Guruvayur, Devaswom minister G Sudhakaran told the state assembly on Thursday.
The existing rule allows entry to a Hindu by 'birth or religion,' he said, adding that it will be amended by adding the word 'faith.'
Sudhakaran, however, added that a detailed discussion was necessary in this regard.
Problems like denial of worship to people like renowned singer K J Yesudas in Guruvayur temple have to be resolved, he said while replying to a submission.
The government's move was opposed only by a minor section of 'orthodox conservatives,' he said.
The government's effort could be considered as a sequel to the historic Temple Entry Proclamation, he added.
Raising the issue, T N Prathapan of Congress said the conduct of purification ritual at Guruvayur temple after the entry of Union Minister Vayalar Ravi's son Ravi Krishna had 'taken the state backwards.'
He demanded that the government take steps to stop this kind of incidents in future.
