Lord Balaji getting fake notes, land deeds!

Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala is getting a different kind of donation in the 'hundi' (collection box) these days -- fake currency notes, lottery tickets and land registration deeds!

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has brought to the notice of the Reserve Bank of India that fake notes worth Rs 50 lakh in various denominations had been recovered from the Sri Vari 'Hundi.'

Also found were lottery tickets before draw dates and documents for land registered in the name of the Lord.

The amount of fake notes had risen to Rs 50,000 per day from Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000 in the past, officials said.

The authorities were taking steps to monitor and verify the documents and lottery tickets. During one such exercise, two demand drafts totalling $1,116 were found in the collection box.
