After spending two nights in jail, cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, convicted and sentenced for three years imprisonment in a road rage case, was released on Saturday on bail granted by the Supreme Court.

Sidhu, also a maverick cricket commentator, was greeted by a number of Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiromani Akali Dal workers led by local legislator Surjit Singh Rakhra when he emerged out of the jail.

The BJP's former Amritsar member of Parliament and his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu were released from the prison on Saturday afternoon, a day after they secured bail from the Supreme Court.

Though the Supreme Court granted him bail on Friday, Sidhu could not be released on Friday as the order reached Patiala prison late in the evening.

Sidhu and Sandhu had surrendered before the chief judicial magistrate in Chandigarh, and were sent to the Patiala jail on Thursday and had moved the apex court for bail.

The duo were sentenced to a three-year rigorous imprisonment for causing the death of Patiala resident Gurnam Singh during a scuffle following an accident.
