President Vladimir Putin's [Images] United Russia [Images] party on Monday won a big majority in Russia's parliamentary election.

The opposition, however, has alleged fraud and have vowed to contest the result.

This election result will enable Putin to keep a hold on power even after he leaves office.

Meanwhile, the US has urged Russia to investigate the claims of widespread rigging in the poll.

Putin's party received more than 60 per cent of the vote.
