In the portico at the Bhavan stands a replica in red stone of a memorial to the Indian National Army -- set up by Netaji to fight India's colonial rulers -- with the INA motto: Ittefaq, Itmad, Kurbani (unity, faith, sacrifice) inscribed on it.
Krishna Bose spent all of Wednesday supervising every detail before Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to Netaji Bhavan on Thursday. The Japanese government assisted the INA during Netaji's battle against the British. Even though controversy continues to shroud his death in an aircrash in August 1945, the Indian government maintains that Netaji's ashes are at the Renkoji temple in Tokyo.
Abe spent about 45 minutes at Netaji Bhavan on Thursday. He said he was "very impressed" and hoped his visit to India would will "strengthen India-Japan ties."
