Arun Jaitley, former law minister and general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, has rubbished the claims of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] that some leaders of the BJP had performed a havan wishing for his death on a certain date.

"The BJP treats the prime minister as a political opponent and not an enemy. We wish him a very long life. May he live long and see after his tenure comes to an end how India is governed much better by others after him," he said in his statement issued by the party's public relations department.

Jaitley wondered how it took Dr Singh three years to find out about the non-existent havans against him. The content of this statement can only be described as rubbish, Jaitley said.

"The Prime Minister must acknowledge that the BJP also had a role in shaping his destiny. Had we not vehemently opposed the first choice of the Congress, Dr Singh as the second preference would have never made to office," he said.

Vijay Kumar Malhotra, deputy leader of the party in Lok Sabha, denied that the BJP resorts to anything like this against its political rivals.
