The wife of senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Gujarat chief minister Keshubhai Patel died on Thursday in a major fire at their residence.

The incident happened early Thursday morning when 76-year old Leelaben tried to switch on an exercising machine in one of the rooms.

After some time, Keshubhai, who was in the nearby room, saw smoke coming out of the other room and shouted for help. When they opened the door, they found Leelaben's burnt body.

Short circuit is believed to have caused the fire, police said.

Shetal Patel, Keshubhai's son-in-law said, "He is in a state of shock".

Immediately after the incident, senior BJP leaders, including Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi [Images], have reached Keshubhai's residence.
