In a novel experiment towards Right to Education, performance status of 1.04 million recognised schools imparting elementary education across the country would be available on internet soon.

The project being carried out by the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration in collaboration with the human resource development ministry and the United Nations Children's Fund would help disseminate information to students, parents and interested community members about the schools.

Major strengths and weaknesses, if any, in respect of schools would also be highlighted in respect of all the 1.04 million schools, an official release said.

The school report cards 2005 would be based on, among other things, the information provided by the schools with regard to enrolment, teachers, facilities in the schools, academic and professional qualification of teachers, examination results, percentage of scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and other backward classes' students and the number of days the schools functioned.

The project started in 1994-95 was aimed at strengthening of Educational Management Information System in the country. The system developed by NIEPA is now popularly known as District Information System for Education operational in 581 districts across 29 states and union territories.

It is expected that remaining districts and states would be covered during the current year.
