In the wake of the Chinese ambassador's recent remarks about his country's claims on Arunachal Pradesh, main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday pressed for a resolution in Parliament declaring the north-eastern state an integral part of India.

Senior BJP leader Lal Kishenchand Advani told reporters in New Delhi that he believed that Parliament should oppose Ambassador Sun Yuxi's comments on Arunachal Pradesh.

Such a resolution will convey to China the "sentiments" of the people of India and that of the state, he said.

Advani said the opposition had agreed to the government's request not to raise the issue in Parliament on Thursday as Hu was in the country, provided the government comes out with a resolution on Arunachal Pradesh on Friday and gets it passed unanimously.

"I am unable to understand why the administration does not want such a resolution on Arunachal," the leader of the opposition said.

Advani said he had received no response so far from Parliamentary Affairs Minister P R Dasmunsi who he insisted promised to get back to him after speaking to the prime minister on the opposition's demand.

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj alleged the government did not want a debate on the Chinese claims on Arunachal Pradesh because of Left pressure.

Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Jaswant Singh and BJP member of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh Tapir Gao were also present at the news briefing.
