Bihar Rural Development Minister Baidyanath Prasad Mahto's name recently figured in the new Below Poverty Line list.

Soon after this was brought to his notice, Mahto ordered a probe by the commissioner of Tirhut division.

"I have ordered a probe into how my name figured in the BPL list. It was shocking and embarassing for me," Mahto told rediff.com over telephone.

Mahto owns a pucca house, a jeep and fertile, cultivable lands in Pakariya village in West Champaran district.

After the Nitish Kumar government came into power in November 2005, it was decided to prepare a new list of BPL persons to get rid of lapses in the previous list.

The government had ordered revision of the BPL list to rectify irregularities by deleting names of undeserving beneficiaries and adding those who were left out.

Earlier this year, the names of a top police officer, a fuel station owner, a retired senior postmaster and a rich farmer have figured in the BPL list.
