May 09, 2006 15:22 IST

A local court on Tuesday granted bail to Sunil Morpani, accused of raping a South African model in Mumbai in December last year.

Sessions judge S S Joshi granted Morpani bail for a sum of Rs 25,000 and warned him not to tamper with evidence.

The 27-year-old model was allegedly drugged and taken from hotel Bawa International in suburban Bandra to another hotel in nearby Ulhasnagar town on December 27 last year and raped by the accused before being dropped home the next day.

Police had on February 2, filed a 200-page chargesheet against the accused - Suresh Krishnani and Sunil Morpani. It charged them under IPC sections 347 (wrongful confinement), 366 (kidnapping a woman to seduce her), 376(1)(g) (gang rape), 324 (causing hurt with dangerous weapon), 328 (administering drugs), 354 (assaulting a woman to molest her) and 292 (sale of obscene books).

Of these, three offences -- gang rape, kidnapping woman to seduce her and administering drugs -- were non-bailable.

However, the sessions court in Mumbai granted bail to Suresh Krishnani two days later.
