Government issues guidelines on phone tapping

February 08, 2006 19:24 IST

The central government on Wednesday issued guidelines with regard to the contentious issue of phone tapping, under which all service providers have been asked to appoint round-the-clock nodal officers, who would acknowledge requests within two hours of intimation from security and law enforcement agencies.

"To all intimations sent by security and law enforcement agencies to them, the service providers will make 24x7 arrangement and arrange to issue acknowledgement letters within two hours for each of the intimation to the security agency concerned in a sealed cover on receipt of such intimations for interceptions," the guidelines said.
