Majority of Democrats prefer Hillary to Obama as presidential candidate: Poll

December 18, 2006 10:33 IST

A majority of Democrats would like to see Hillary Clinton nominated as the party's candidate for next president if the choice comes down between her and African-American Illinois Senator Barack Obama, a new poll shows.

The Newsweek poll found 86 per cent of respondents saying that if their party nominated a woman president, they would vote for her if she were qualified for the job.

When asked if their party nominated an African-American for president, 93 per cent said they would vote for him or her.

But if race for nomination boils down between Hillary Clinton and Obama, 50 per cent prefer Hillary against 32 per cent who favour Obama.
