5-day detention for Indian despite valid visa
December 08, 2006 11:59 IST
An Indian student was forced to spend five days at an immigration detention centre in Kuala Lumpur though he had a valid visa, a relative of the student has claimed.

Mohammad Shahid Dar, 23, from Srinagar [Images], who studies Journalism at a local college, was released on Friday after being picked up by immigration officials on Sunday, his cousin Shahid Anjum a resident of Kuala Lumpur, told PTI.

Dar was picked up by RELA (voluntary Immigration officials) from a shopping mall in downtown Kuala Lumpur. He was sent to a detention camp where people without valid papers or visas are remanded even though he had showed his student identity card to the officials, Anjum said.

The college too had sent the camp officials all relevant papers regarding the student on Monday, he added.

The boy's release came after Indian embassy officials sent documents regarding the student's passport, visa and college papers to the foreign ministry and the immigration office in Kuala Lumpur.
