For those who have no one, there's Vidyakar

August 14, 2006
From the office of Udavum Karangal, we were going to the homes where babies, children, girls, boys and elderly -- all in need of support -- live.

Our first stop is at a private hospital from where Vidyakar had just received a call. A girl child had been delivered by caesarean section two hours ago to a 19-year-old rape victim. The girl didn't want to see the baby's face. Who would the hospital authorities call but Vidyakar?

He returned with the baby wrapped in a white towel and kept her close to his body like a mother. The baby's lips curled and the tiny hands searched for the mother but caught hold of his hands.

Will she remember the warmth of his body years later, he who had to be her 'mother' just a couple of hours after she was born. She may.
