Urging the international community to find an amicable solution to the impasse over Iran's disputed nuclear programme, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee Wednesday said Tehran as a signatory to the Non Proliferation Treaty should fulfil its international commitments to it.

"An impasse has been created on the Iran issue, but the international community should assert itself to find an amicable solution acceptable to Iran, a sovereign country," Mukherjee told a meet-the-press programme in Kolkata.

He said the issue has to be resolved keeping in view the sovereign rights of every nation, which pursued nuclear programmes in a peaceful way.

At the same time, those who were signatories to the NPT including Iran, should fulfil their international commitments to it, he said.

To a question whether India could play a mediatory role on the Iran issue, the defence minister said it was very difficult to make a firm commitment about the role of any individual country.

"In a situation like this, a country, especially a mature country like India, takes a decision considering all aspects as and when they emerge," he said.

Mukherjee said India would like to see the resolution of the impasse in an amicable manner acceptable to all parties.
