The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized a sports utility vehicle, a Toyota Landcruiser, from the son of former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu on charges that it was brought into the country after tax evasion, DRI sources said on Tuesday.

The DRI sleuths seized the vehicle of businessman Chandan Basu during an ongoing probe into a racket of importing cars by evading custom duty upto 105 per cent. Chandan Basu's role in the scam was being investigated, they said.

The DRI has seized eight more imported cars brought into the country allegedly by one Sanjay Bhandari, who claimed to be a hotelier.

Bhandari had obtained a license from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade for importing luxury cars for foreign clients and earned foreign exchange. He claims to own two non-existent hotels in Rajasthan, the sources alleged.
