Former Rashtriya Janata Dal member of legislative assembly and the party's nominee from Hayaghat constituency for the February polls, Harinandan Yadav, was on Thursday arrested in Darbhanga in connection with a criminal case when he turned up to file his nomination papers, a senior police official said.

Yadav was arrested at the office of the sub-divisional magistrate Badood Ahmed.

A non-bailable arrest warrant was pending against Yadav for having led a mob to breach an embankment during the 2002 floods in his constituency.

The Patna high court recently barred those against whom arrest warrants are pending from contesting elections.

Yadav later filed his nomination papers in police custody.
