A major disaster was averted in Guwahati, thanks to the alertness of a lady.

Police said the woman noticed a suspicious-looking, abandoned plastic packet in a pit near her house in Bamunimaidan around 0930 IST on Tuesday.

On opening it she and two of her relatives noticed batteries and electric wires in a tin. They immediately informed the police, which arrived with a bomb disposal squad.

The policemen dragged the packet with a rope to the middle of a nearby open field.  The bomb squad found a five-kg programmable time device and defused the explosive.

Police suspect United Liberation Front of Asom would have hidden it for taking it to some other populated area, sources said.

City Superintendent of Police H Nath rewarded the woman and her two relatives with Rs 10,000 each.
