January 01, 2005 05:09 IST

People have donated a whopping Rs 100 crore towards the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for the tsunami-affected people in the last 3-4 days.

Apart from this amount, newspapers and other organisations were also collecting funds to be donated to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, PMO spokesperson Sanjay Baru told reporters in Delhi on Friday.

"The prime minister has described the response from the people as very encouraging and has expressed his gratitude for their magnanimity," Baru said after the PM's return to the capital from a tour of tsunami-affected areas in Tamil Nadu, Kerala [Images] and Andhra Pradesh.

He also revealed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] would soon tour Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
