Rashtriya Janata Dal member of Parliament Mohammed Shahabuddin was on Thursday released from the high-security Beur jail after Chief Minister Rabri Devi set aside the Siwan district magistrate's order detaining him till February 28.

The chief minister said the assembly elections are over and directed Home Commissioner Girish Shankar to issue an official notification for Shahabuddin's release, highly placed sources said.

Siwan District Magistrate C K Anil had issued the order detaining Shahabuddin in judicial custody under the Bihar Control of Crime Act, 1982.

The DM had also banned Shahabuddin from entering the district for one year.

On February 18, the Patna high court granted bail to Shahabuddin in connection with the abduction and murder of Munna Choudhury of the Communist Party of India Marxist Leninist (Liberation).

Bharatiya Janata Party national vice-president S K Modi said Rabri Devi is misusing her powers.

"Shahabuddin has been released from Beur jail violating the model code as the election process in Siwan is yet to be completed," Modi said.

"The counting for Siwan is to take place on February 27 and there are possibilities of the Election Commission ordering a re-poll in some booths in Siwan where electoral malpractices were reported. In the given situation, the release of the RJD MP, who is a terror in Siwan, is highly objectionable," he said.
