6,064 people died in Nagapattinam district where Akkarapettai is located. 3,377 died in Nagapattinam taluk alone. 1,900 in Akkarapettai.

The scale of destruction was so huge in the district that 11 IAS officers headed relief teams consisting of 1,380 officers.

200 army officers, jawans and naval staff assisted rescue and relief.

1,479 police officers, 120 medical teams, 2032 sanitary workers were deployed.

A month after the tsunami, Akkarapettai is getting back to life. Vegetable vendors are back, small grocery stores are open and people have returned to their partially damaged homes.

The barber has begun business, but quietly, lest he missed out on compensation and many children have returned to school.

There is even a shop called Mother Tsunami.
