Ramzan, month of fasting, begins

Muslims in Kerala on Friday began the month-long fast as imams (priests) confirmed sighting of the new moon marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan.

Imam of Palayam mosque in Thiruvananthapuram, P K Hamza Moulavi Farooqui, said in a statement on Thursday night that the Ramzan fast would begin from Friday.

Muslim cultural and social organizations in different parts of the state launched charity and relief activities in connection with the event.
