Powell exit will not hit ties with India

November 16, 2004 10:40 IST

The US said Tuesday that it does not expect any major policy changes with New Delhi after the resignation of Secretary of State Colin Powell.

"US will continue the strong relations with India. Powell was instrumental in helping easing the tensions between India and Pakistan", White House Spokesman Scott McClellan said.

Talking to reporters after announcing the resignation of Powell and three of his cabinet colleagues, he said "I do not expect any policy changes after the resignation of Powell".

"We will continue to work and make efforts in this (peace between India and Pakistan) direction", he said.

Powell was a key figure in bringing about a thaw in Indo-Pak relations.
