I have been covering Republic Day celebrations for the last three decades. Twenty-two years for Doordarshan and then for CNN.

I began covering the Republic Day function in 1976. Since then I have been doing it every year. There has been a tremendous change between then and now, particularly in terms of security.

Earlier we could carry a flask of tea and biscuits with us, but now you cannot even carry a packet of biscuits. Then, our stand used to be near the Presidential saluting base, now we have been pushed further back. At that time we could also come down and cover the arrival of VVIPs and return to our places. Now you cannot even think of doing so.

All said and done it is a great pleasure to cover the Republic Day function because where can you get this colourful extravaganza at one place? It is exciting to be there in the midst of it all, no matter how risky it may be.

As told to Onkar Singh
