Patil, Aiyar, Maran to visit affected states

December 26, 2004 17:06 IST

Home Minister Shivraj Patil will undertake a tour of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar islands, which have been hit by tsunamis caused by an earthquake in the Sumatra island of Indonesia.

Patil will first fly to Hyderabad on Sunday and then go to Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar islands, official sources said. The home minister is expected to spend the next two days in the disaster-hit regions, they said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has asked Union ministers Mani Shankar Aiyar and Dayanidhi Maran to visit the affected areas in Tamil Nadu.

A Prime Minister's Office spokesman said the PM has deputed Aiyar and Maran to assist the state administration in the rescue and relief work.

The PMO is in constant touch with the state governments, the spokesman said.
