Child marriage with Union minister's blessing

December 18, 2004 21:09 IST

A complaint case was filed against Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Kanti Singh, for allegedly having attended a 'child marriage' at the residence of a senior Rohtas district official.

Ravishanker Raj, Bihar unit general secretary of Janata Dal (U), filed a case against Singh, sub-divisional officer of Bikramganj in Rohtas district, Mahipal Singh Yadav, district development commisioner Bhaglu Rajak and others in the court of Bikramganj sub-divisional judicial magistrate, Pandey Vijay Prakash Narain, accusing them of promoting child marriage in violation of the Child Marriage (Prevention) act, 1929.

Kanti Singh is alleged to have blessed the couple -- Pinki Kumari (14) and Ashok Kumar Giri (15) -- after their marriage was solemnised on December 12.

Rajbali Giri and Ramchandra Giri, fathers of Pinki and Ashok respectively -- were not available for comment.
