India, Russia and China have agreed to adopt a common approach on the proposed United States-sponsored resolution on Iraq, and on United Nations reforms.

The three countries will set up an expert group that will identify areas for cooperation among them.

External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, after a meeting with his counterparts from Russia Igor Ivanov and China Li Zhao Xing in New York on Wednesday, said they had very good discussions.

The three countries, he said, agreed that what Iraq needed was a political solution, and not more troops.

Sovereignty and governance should return to Iraqis, Sinha said.

"This will be the approach and we decided to work together on the new resolution on Iraq," he said.

Sinha said they also agreed to work out a common approach to the issue of UN reforms.

The three countries have asked their ambassadors in New York to work together on it, the minister said.

"We also discussed about trilateral cooperation among the three countries and we decided that this is again something that could be remitted to an expert group," Sinha said.
